Every year, Davids Engineering welcomes a group of college students to work alongside our team members on various projects. This provides the students with hands on experience and provides DE support and fresh ideas. We want to take some time to highlight this year’s interns.
Jorge Vargas Lara is a masters student and University of California, Davis studying Water Resources Engineering. As an intern at DE, he has been tasked with updating scripts used to manage internal and external crop databases, working with APIs to extract valuable weather data from remote sensors, and documenting in house codes. Jorge also spends some time in the field collecting water salinity readings and soil samples.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I am from Colton, California, a small rail town in southern California. I am a master’s student at the University of California, Davis studying Water Resource Engineering. I love tennis, hiking, and reading (particularly in coffee shops).
WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS?
My goal is to be a groundwater and surface water modeler, working within the government and private sector developing robust and thoughtful water management systems.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO INTERN AT DE?
Davids Engineering provided me a unique opportunity to learn more about the water management industry, as well as new and developing technology. I am exposed to a wide range of specialties from remote sensing, groundwater modeling, data analysis, GIS, field work, and more.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH/LEARN AS AN INTERN?
I hope to advance my python skills, learning to develop, deploy and document my own code at a professional level. I also want to learn how to provide insights from extensive data sets for the benefit of communities and stakeholders.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET UP AND GO TO SCHOOL/WORK?
I think about my parents and all the sacrifices they made to help me get this far. How they provided me an opportunity for a better life. It’s important for me to pay it back not only to them but back to the community. Being part of the Davids team has afforded me the opportunity to give back by providing support to our essential agricultural communities.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
“Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere” – Anton Ego (Ratatouille)
I believe this quote is not only relevant to artist, and cooks but engineers as well.
