Every year, Davids Engineering welcomes a group of college students to work alongside our team members on various projects. This provides the students with hands on experience and provides DE support and fresh ideas. We want to take some time to highlight this year’s interns.
Logan Beach is a civil engineering student at California State University, Chico. As an intern at DE, he has helped take flow measurements in the field, updated Python scripts to connect water data to QGIS displays, and worked on developing internal Python tools to better present information to clients.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I am from Loma Rica, California. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and a minor in computer science at California State University, Chico. I’m involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers chapter at CSU, Chico. Within ASCE, I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with fellow students, helping build a concrete canoe, and foster the next generation of engineers through community outreach events. Outside of school and work, I enjoy hiking, video games, and hockey (Go Sharks!).
WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS?
My career goal is to be at the forefront of innovative water infrastructure and management solutions. I aspire to bridge the gap between computer science tools and civil engineering problems. Pursuing education beyond my bachelor’s and obtaining my professional engineering license are large parts of my ultimate career goals.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO INTERN AT DE?
I chose to intern at DE because of their mission to manage water efficiently and effectively to help communities prosper. This mission resonates with the reason I chose to study civil engineering – to provide services, like water management, that enable people to thrive.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH/LEARN AS AN INTERN?
As an intern, I hope to learn more about how engineers make water management decisions. I hope to develop my problem-solving toolkit by engaging with new software tools like Python and QGIS. I’d also like to gain exposure to infrastructure design.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET UP AND GO TO SCHOOL/WORK?
My motivation to go to school and work stems from my desire to understand how our world functions. I want to be a part of keeping our communities safe and healthy. Civil engineering is a career where I can explore that passion. That passion fuels my motivation.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Ask questions! I’ve learned that it is easy to feel overwhelmed and underqualified in a STEM field. Early on, professors at CSU Chico enforced that asking questions is the key to success. I try to embody this and always ask for help when needed. It can save a lot of time and frustration and open the door to great conversations!
