Every year, Davids Engineering welcomes a group of college students to work alongside our team members on various projects. This provides the students with hands on experience and provides DE support and fresh ideas. We want to take some time to highlight this year’s interns.
Jesus Rivera is studying civil engineering at Butte Community College. He was first introduced to DE through the SURIE (Summer Undergraduate Research/Internship Experience) program and he’s been a great addition to our team this summer!
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and moved to California when I was a year old. I grew up in a small town called Live Oak where I currently still live. I attend Butte Community College, and I am studying Civil Engineering. I plan to transfer hopefully in the next year. I’m involved in the MESA, SHPE, and SURIE programs.
Some current hobbies I do in my free time are fishing for bass, trout, steelhead, and salmon. I also enjoying running through different routes in Live Oak and playing video games like BO7 and UFC.
WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS?
My ultimate career goals are to graduate with a bachelor’s degree, then pursue a master’s degree and possibly a doctorate’s degree in civil engineering. Once I’ve completed my degree, I’d like to join a engineering firm that prioritizes their employees as much as they prioritize their work. Hopefully I will get to travel to new places doing work too.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO INTERN AT DE?
I first was introduced to Davids Engineering through the SURIE program. As I looked into this company more, I was intrigued with the work they did for local water districts. I had never thought about water resources as a pathway, so I thought this would be a great learning opportunity to experience the water resources side of civil engineering.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH/LEARN AS AN INTERN?
A goal of mine is to help do an install at one of their field sites. I also would like to learn more about the different equipment they use and get introduced to Python to learn how coding language is used.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET UP AND GO TO SCHOOL/WORK?
My parents motivate me to get up go to school/work. Seeing what they have gone through to be able to get me to where I’m at is what moves me to keep learning and working, so that what they did for me pays off.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
If you yourself aren’t putting in the work and time to learn and get better, then who else is going to put the work in for you? No one. So get after it.
