DE Intern Spotlight – Evan Kumangai, E.I.T.

Every year, Davids Engineering welcomes a group of college students to work alongside our team members on various projects for the summer. This provides the students with hands on experience and provides DE support and fresh ideas. We want to take some time to highlight this year’s interns.

Evan Kumangai is currently attending California State University, Chico and pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. He is also an Engineer in Training. One of Evan’s roles at Davids Engineering this summer is assisting Biggs West Gridley Water District with various projects and field work.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I grew up in Chico and ended up attending California State University, Chico to pursue a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. I am involved with some young adult groups at the churches I attend and through this I have gone white water rafting and play volleyball on Tuesday nights.

WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS?
To graduate with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, get a job, and be licensed as a Professional Engineer.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO INTERN AT DE?
I am interested in water resource engineering, and it sounded like a fun and productive use of my summer.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH/LEARN AS AN INTERN?
I would like to get an understanding of what work is like in the civil engineering field, and make some connections that can help me find a job after I graduate this winter.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET UP AND GO TO SCHOOL/WORK?
I want to buy a house, and this requires a considerable amount of money.

WHAT’S SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
In my free time, I like to participate in eating contests. I once ate 14 bananas during a competition.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
To do hard things. Only through stepping out of your comfort zone do you grow, and you build character through challenging yourself.
